Aims: This systematic review aims to identify 3D predictors derived from biplanar reconstruction, and to describe current methods for improving curve prediction in patients with mild adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted by three independent investigators on MEDLINE, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Search terms included "adolescent idiopathic scoliosis","3D", and "progression". The inclusion and exclusion criteria were carefully defined to include clinical studies. Risk of bias was assessed with the Quality in Prognostic Studies tool (QUIPS) and Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS), and level of evidence for each predictor was rated with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. In all, 915 publications were identified, with 377 articles subjected to full-text screening; overall, 31 articles were included. Results: Torsion index (TI) and apical vertebral rotation (AVR) were identified as accurate predictors of curve progression in early visits. Initial TI > 3.7° and AVR > 5.8° were predictive of curve progression. Thoracic hypokyphosis was inconsistently observed in progressive curves with weak evidence. While sagittal wedging was observed in mild curves, there is insufficient evidence for its correlation with curve progression. In curves with initial Cobb angle < 25°, Cobb angle was a poor predictor for future curve progression. Prediction accuracy was improved by incorporating serial reconstructions in stepwise layers. However, a lack of post-hoc analysis was identified in studies involving geometrical models. Conclusion: For patients with mild curves, TI and AVR were identified as predictors of curve progression, with TI > 3.7° and AVR > 5.8° found to be important thresholds. Cobb angle acts as a poor predictor in mild curves, and more investigations are required to assess thoracic kyphosis and wedging as predictors. Cumulative reconstruction of radiographs improves prediction accuracy. Comprehensive analysis between progressive and non-progressive curves is recommended to extract meaningful thresholds for clinical prognostication.

The antioxidant N-(1,3-Dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p- phenylenediamine (6PPD) is used to protect the rubber in tires from oxidation, which extends the life of the tire. When oxidized, 6PPD is transformed into 6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ). 6PPDQ, along with other tire ingredients, can enter aquatic ecosystems through the transport of tire wear particles in runoff during a precipitation event. The mass mortality of coho salmon following precipitation events in urban areas lead to the discovery that 6PPDQ is the likely cause due to coho salmon's relatively high sensitivity to 6PPDQ. The assessment of 6PPDQ toxicity to other aquatic species has expanded, but it has focused on fish. This study investigated the toxicity of 6PPDQ to four freshwater invertebrate species, larval burrowing mayfly (Hexagenia spp.), juvenile cladoceran (Daphnia magna), file ramshorn snail embryo (Planorbella pilsbryi), and adult washboard mussel (Megalonaias nervosa). For all four species, the highest concentration of 6PPDQ tested did not result in significant mortality. This translated into the determination of the highest concentration that did not cause significant mortality (NOEC) for Hexagenia spp., D. magna, P. pilsbryi, and M. nervosa of 232.0, 42.0, 11.7, and 17.9 µg/L, respectively. The data from this study indicate that freshwater invertebrates are not as sensitive to 6PPDQ as some salmonid species (e.g., coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch). This study also analyzed 6PPDQ in road runoff from around the city of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. 6PPQ was detected in all samples but the concentration was two orders of magnitude lower than the NOECs for the four tested species of freshwater invertebrate.

BACKGROUND: Stevia rebaudiana is a high value crop due to the strong commercial demand for its metabolites (steviol glycosides) but has limited geographical cultivation range. In non-native environments with different daylength and light quality, Stevia has low germination rates and early flowering resulting in lower biomass and poor yield of the desired metabolites. In this study, artificial lighting with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was used to determine if different light quality within and outside of the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) range can be used to improve germination rates and yields for production of steviol glycosides for the herbal supplement and food industry. RESULTS: Plants treated with red and blue light at an intensity of 130 µmol m-2  s-1 supplemented with 5% of UV-A light under a 16-h photoperiod produced the most desirable overall results with a high rate of germination, low percentage of early flowering, and high yields of dry leaf, stevioside and rebaudioside A, 175 days after planting. CONCLUSION: While red and blue light combinations are effective for plant growth, the use of supplemental non-PAR irradiation of UV-A wavelength significantly and desirably delayed flowering, enhanced germination, biomass, rebaudioside A and stevioside yields, while supplemental green light improved yield of biomass and rebaudioside A, but not stevioside. Overall, the combination of red, blue and UV-A light resulted in the best overall productivity for Stevia rebaudiana. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase(HMGR) is the first rate-limiting enzyme in the mevalonic acid(MVA)pathway and it is an important regulatory site in the metabolism of terpenoids in the cytoplasm. In this study, Siraitia grosvenorii that had been pollinated 0 day,1 day,3 days,15 days and 30 days were used as experimental materials. Based on the transcriptome data, two HMGR genes were cloned from S. grosvenorii cDNA and named SgHMGR2(GenBank Accession Numbers MT270447) and SgHMGR3(GenBank Accession Number MT270448). The two genes contain open reading frames(ORFs) of 1 746 bp and 1 782 bp, encoding 582 and 594 amino acids, and their molecular masses are estimated to be 62.7,63.2 kDa, respectively. Isoelectric point are 8.34 and 7.47, both of which do not contain signal peptides, are non-secretory proteins, and have two transmembrane structures. Combining the conserved regions of the proteins and the analysis of the evolutionary tree, it was confirmed that the genes are indeed HMGR family genes. Real-time PCR was used to detect the expression pattern of SgHMGRs at different times after pollination, and the highest expression level was 15 days after pollination. Finally, two full-length SgHMGRs were cloned from S. grosvenorii for the first time, and the differential expression of SgHMGRs at different times after pollination was revealed, providing a research basis for the mining of key enzyme gene elements in the biosynthesis pathway of S. grosvenorii terpenoids.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)-associated pulmonary hypertension is not uncommon and carries a worse prognosis if left untreated, it is less well recognized by clinicians. This review provides information on prevalence, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis of pulmonary hypertension in OSA. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in OSA ranges from 17 to 53%. The underlying pathophysiology is complex and yet to be fully understood. Continuous positive airway pressure has been proven to be efficacious in the treatment of OSA-associated pulmonary hypertension. SUMMARY: There is still lack of research in this field. We look forward to more well designed studies to help us understand this disease entity better.

Menthol belongs to monoterpene class of a structurally diverse group of phytochemicals found in plant-derived essential oils. Menthol is widely used in pharmaceuticals, confectionary, oral hygiene products, pesticides, cosmetics, and as a flavoring agent. In addition, menthol is known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects. Recently, there has been renewed awareness in comprehending the biological and pharmacological effects of menthol. TRP channels have been demonstrated to mediate the cooling actions of menthol. There has been new evidence demonstrating that menthol can significantly influence the functional characteristics of a number of different kinds of ligand and voltage-gated ion channels, indicating that at least some of the biological and pharmacological effects of menthol can be mediated by alterations in cellular excitability. In this article, we examine the results of earlier studies on the actions of menthol with voltage and ligand-gated ion channels.

Plant flavonoids are generally regarded as natural replacers of synthetic growth promoters in poultry production. This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of plant flavonoids, such as genistein and hesperidin, in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged broilers. A total of 700 21-day-old commercial Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly assigned into six treatment groups, each having six pens of 20 chicks/pen. Chicks were fed a basal diet without any additive (control, CON), 5 mg genistein/kg feed (G5), 20 mg hesperidin/kg (H20), or a basal diet with a combination of genistein and hesperidin (1 : 4) with doses of 5 mg/kg feed (GH5), 10 mg/kg (GH10) and 20 mg/kg (GH20) for 6 weeks. Half of the birds from each treatment were separated, and either challenged with 0·9% sodium chloride solution or Escherichia coli LPS (250 µg/kg BW) on days 16, 18 and 20. The results showed that both genistein and hesperidin improved (P<0.01) the plasma antioxidant status of growing broilers, by increasing total antioxidant capacity (TAOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decreasing malondialdehyde production. LPS challenge further increased (P<0.05) TAOC and SOD levels. Regardless of LPS challenge, both genistein and hesperidin improved the humoral and mucosal immunity by increasing the intestinal intraepithelial lymphocyte numbers (P<0.01), as well as anti-Newcastle disease and anti-avian influenza antibody titers (P<0.05). Supplementation of both the plant flavonoids generally increased (P<0.05) the immune organs indices (spleen, thymus and bursa). Thus, supplementation of basal diet of broiler chicks, either with genistein or hesperidin, improved immune and antioxidant status of growing broilers. In addition, combined supplementation of both the flavonoids showed further improvement than individual compounds.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Management of unrecognized recurrent laryngeal nerve injury typically entails delayed phonosurgical intervention and laryngeal reinnervation, but in cases of recognized injury, nerve anastomosis has been considered standard management. However, the well-organized outcome analysis of nerve anastomosis has been insufficient. We performed immediate direct anastomosis of recurrent laryngeal nerves injured during surgery for thyroid cancer, and subsequent patient outcomes were analyzed. STUDY DESIGN: A total 14 patients sustaining recurrent laryngeal nerve injury during thyroidectomy were recruited for the study. Patients undergoing immediate direct reparative anastomosis of the injured nerves constituted the test group, whereas the controls of group 2 (n = 4) did not. METHODS: At follow-up, all patients submitted to rigid laryngoscopy at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Subjective and objective outcomes of the two groups were then compared. RESULTS: At 12 months postoperatively, group 1 showed greater improvement in maximum phonation time, glottic gap scores, GRBAS (grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain) scales, aspiration scoring, and Voice Handicap Index than controls of group 2. Moreover, group 1 showed an improvement in all five categories at 12 months postoperatively, compared with status at 3 months. None of the patients in group 1 showed laryngoscopic evidence of vocal cord atrophy. CONCLUSION: In this study, patients undergoing immediate direct recurrent laryngeal nerve anastomosis demonstrated better phonation and perceptually rated voice quality than those who did not undergo repair. This study investigated the supplemental effects of the flavonoids genistein and hesperidin for biomarkers of heat stress in broilers reared under persistent summer stress. A total of 360 one-day-old, mixed-sex broiler chickens were divided into 6 treatment groups: control or supplemented with 5 mg of genistein•kg of feed(-1), 20 mg of hesperidin•kg of feed(-1), or a mixture of genistein and hesperidin (1:4) at a dosage of 5 mg•kg(-1), 10 mg•kg(-1), and 20 mg•kg(-1) of feed. Broilers were slaughtered at 42 d and samples were analyzed for hematological profile, creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and heat shock protein 70 mRNA levels. Results showed that dietary genistein and hesperidin improved (P < 0.05) the weekly performance of broilers particularly during the finisher period. The circulating heterophils and heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratios were found to decrease (P < 0.01) in the treated groups. Moreover, biomarkers of heat stress including the level of creatine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, and heat shock protein 70 mRNA of breast muscle was also changed (P < 0.01) positively by the dietary compounds with pronounced effects of combined treatments. These findings suggested that genistein and hesperidin could be a prime strategy to ameliorate summer stress effects in broilers; and a combination of both compounds may lead to mutual synergistic effects. It could be suggested that dietary use of both genistein and hesperidin as a feed supplement may offer a potential nutritional strategy in tropical and subtropical regions to overcome the deleterious effects of persistent summer stress in broiler production.

Deterioration of the cortical cholinergic system is a leading neurochemical feature of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). This review summarizes evidence that the homomeric α7- nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of this disease, which is characterized by amyloid-ß (Aß) accumulations and neurofibrillary tangles originating from of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Aß binds to α7-nAChRs with a high affinity, either activating or inhibiting this receptor in a concentration-dependent manner. There is strong evidence that α7-nAChRs are neuroprotective, reducing Aß-induced toxicity; but co-localization of α7- nAChRs, Aß and amyloid plaques also points to neurodegenerative actions. Aß induces tau phosphorylation via α7-nAChR activation. Aß influences hippocampus-dependent memory and long-term potentiation in a dose-dependent way: there is evidence that enhancement by picomolar Aß concentrations is mediated by α7-nAChRs, whereas inhibition by nanomolar concentrations is independent of nAChRs and probably mediated by small Aß42 oligomers. α7-nAChRs located on vascular smooth muscle cells and astrocytes are also involved in the pathogenesis of AD. Although these data strongly point to an important role of α7-nAChRs in the development of AD, dose-dependence of the effects, rapid desensitization of the receptor and dependence of the effects on Aß aggregation (monomers, oligomers, fibrils) make it difficult to develop simple therapeutic strategies acting upon this receptor.

The XIXth century is the period of the sugar industrialization in Réunion. In spite of the abolition of the slaves trade in 1817 and the English abolition of the slavery of 1833, the sugar industry imported large numbers of African and Asian workers which exceeded in number the white population and that of the slaves. As the public health and the health controls came under the governor, the prevention was insufficient in the XIXth century. There were several establishments of "decontamination", sanitary observation in Saint-Denis under the authority of the colonial doctor. However, in the absence of a lazaret, the ship which transported imported workers had to be suspected to be contaminated not to be granted access. The lazaret of La grande chaloupe opened lately around 1850. Under the pressure of the industry, traders and captains, not all immigrants passed by the lazaret before entering the island. Therefore, the public health relative to the massive immigration in Réunion depended more on the private domain than on the public domain because the immigration was linked with major economic interests.

Bovine lactoferrin (bLF) is a member of the transferrin family; it plays an important role in the innate immune response. We identified novel splice variants of the bLF gene in mastitis-infected and healthy cows. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and clone sequencing analysis were used to screen the splice variants of the bLF gene in the mammary gland, spleen and liver tissues. One main transcript corresponding to the bLF reference sequence was found in three tissues in both healthy and mastitis-infected cows. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that the expression levels of the LF gene's main transcript were not significantly different in tissues from healthy versus mastitis-infected cows. However, the new splice variant, LF-AS2, which has the exon-skipping alternative splicing pattern, was only identified in mammary glands infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Sequencing analysis showed that the new splice variant was 251 bp in length, including exon 1, part of exon 2, part of exon 16, and exon 17. We conclude that bLF may play a role in resistance to mastitis through alternative splicing mechanisms.

RESUMEN

Tornwaldt's cyst (sometimes called Thornwaldt's cyst) is a rare cause of occipital headache. Owing to the rare occurrence of occipital headache as a symptom of Tornwaldt's cyst, if the patient presented only with occipital headache, this clinical symptom may be falsely perceived as a sign of neurologic disease leading to time-consuming diagnostic examinations that delay the establishment of a correct diagnosis.

Atrazine (6-chloro-N2-ethyl-N4-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) behavior was studied in four surface soils during incubations in laboratory conditions. Soils were chosen in relation to their cropping management (tillage and no tillage) and crop rotation system (continuous soybean [Glycine mar (L.) Merr.] and maize (Zea mays L.)-soybean rotation). A natural soil under brushwood was sampled as a reference. Atrazine use in field conditions was associated with maize cropping, thus only one soil received atrazine every other year. Atrazine behavior was characterized through the balance of 14C-U-ring atrazine radioactivity among the mineralized fraction, the extractable fraction, and the nonextractable bound residues. Soil organic matter capacity to form bound residues was characterized using soil size fractionation. Accelerated atrazine mineralization was only observed in the soil receiving atrazine in field conditions. Atrazine application every other year was enough to develop a microflora adapted to triazine ring mineralization. Bound residue formation was rapid and increased with soil organic matter content. The coarsest soil size fractions (2000-200 and 200-50 microm) containing the nonhumified organic matter presented the highest capacity to form bound residues. No effect of tillage system was observed, probably because of the uniform sampling depth at 20 cm, hiding the stratification pattern of soil organic matter in non-tilled soils.

RESUMEN

Mouse monoclonal antibodies E29 and 115D8 have been raised in the human milk fat globule membrane. The distribution of the antigen detected by these two monoclonal antibodies has been examined in formalin-fixed paraffin-embeded human ovarian tumors by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique. The highest positive rate of E29 and 115D8 was obtained in the malignant group suggesting that there is relationship between this positive rate and the histological malignancy. As for serous cystadenocarcinomas, a strong staining area of E29 was observed in the diffuse cytoplasm in poorly differentiated cases. These results suggest that the presence of E29 is a useful tumor marker for ovarian cancer.
